maths performance task - personal reflection

Statistics is about the collection, organization, and interpretation of data.  i learnt that statistics include Bar graph, pictogram, histogram, line graph and pie chart.

Statisticians improve the quality of data with the design of experiments and survey sampling. Statistics also provides tools for prediction and forecasting using data and statistical models. Statistics is applicable to a wide variety of academic disciplines, including natural and social sciences, government, and business. Statistical consultants are available to provide help for organizations and companies without direct access to expertise relevant to their particular problems.

Misuse of statistics can produce subtle, but serious errors in description and interpretation — subtle in the sense that even experienced professionals make such errors, and serious in the sense that they can lead to devastating decision errors. For instance, social policy, medical practice, and the reliability of structures like bridges all rely on the proper use of statistics.

Even when statistical techniques are correctly applied, the results can be difficult to interpret for those lacking expertise. The statistical significance of a trend in the data — which measures the extent to which a trend could be caused by random variation in the sample — may or may not agree with an intuitive sense of its significance. The set of basic statistical skills (and skepticism) that people need to deal with information in their everyday lives properly.
Uses
Statistics is primarily used either to make predictions based on the data available or to make conclusions about a population of interest when only sample data is available. In both cases statistics tries to make sense of the uncertainty in the available data. When making predictions statisticians determine if the difference in the data points are due to chance or if there is a systematic relationship.
The more the systematic relationship that is observed the better the prediction a statistician can make. The more random error that is observed the more uncertain the prediction.
Statisticians can provide a measure of the uncertainty to the prediction. When making inference about a population, the statistician is trying to estimate how good a summary statistic of a sample really is at estimating a population statistic.

other examples are
School Grades , the stock-market , the weather and the electricity bill

summarize

(1) Statistics helps in providing a better understanding and exact description of a phenomenon of nature.
(2) Statistical helps in proper and efficient planning of a statistical inquiry in any field of study.
(3) Statistical helps in collecting an appropriate quantitative data.
(4) Statistics helps in presenting complex data in a suitable tabular, diagrammatic and graphic form for an easy and clear comprehension of the data.
(5) Statistics helps in understanding the nature and pattern of variability of a phenomenon through quantitative observations.
(6) Statistics helps in drawing valid inference, along with a measure of their reliability about the population parameters from the sample data.

Chap 2: Real Numbers - Rational Numbers

Janice explanation, that all other fractions with denominator are also recurring decimals is wrong, as 1/2 is a terminating decimal and it has a denominator.

Reflections

1. What were 3 of the highlights of the Orientation and the last 2 weeks?

The high elements , the time with the PSL and the time in the camp.

2. What were 3 of the "low" moments of Orientation and the last 2 weeks

The low moments are the time we left the camp , the PLS'S left us and the time when i failed the rock climb.

3. What are 3 of my greatest takeways/lessons from the Orientation and the last 2 weeks?

I learnt that i can  speak up, face my fears of stage fright

4. What did you learn about yourself in the last 2 weeks?

I learnt that i am very shy

5. What are you looking forward in 2011?

I am looking forward to use my learning device for studies.

Communication - Homework

1. Why is communication important?

Communication plays an important role in the process of imparting knowledge as well.

2. What is/are your favourite forms of communication? Why?

My favorite form of communication is verbal communication.  it is more direct.

3. How do you decide which form of communication to use in a situation?
